Its main function was to receive television and telephone signals broadcast in the United States, amplify them 10 billion times and broadcast them in Europe - and vice versa.
The first transatlantic television broadcast took place on July 23, 1962 and starred John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States.
Its development was made possible by engineer John Pierce, who created the project from ideas he found in science fiction books.
